An AI engine with web search runs a few searches, reads the pages it finds and links the ones it drew from. For a buying question those pages are best-of lists, marketplace listings, review videos and forum threads, rarely a brand homepage. So most of the work to get cited happens on other people's pages. This guide helps you find those pages, get onto them and track the gaps.
Where to start
- Don't know which sites AI cites for your category? Start at Step 1. Everything else depends on that list.
- You know the lists and reviewers, but nobody has featured you? Go to Step 2 and send a pitch they can check.
- A competitor keeps getting named and you don't? Log it in Step 3 and get one clear next action.
Map the pages AI already cites for your category
Ask 3 buying questions that don't contain your brand name, such as "best vitamin C serum for oily skin under ₹600", on ChatGPT (web search on), Gemini and Perplexity. Use a logged-out window. Click the sources under each answer and copy every link. Paste them below, one per line. Put the engine name in front if you can (Perplexity: https://…) so the tool can spot sites more than one engine trusts.
Citation source mapper Example links
Runs in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere. It sorts each link into Reddit, YouTube, marketplace, list article, review site or brand site, then tells you which channel to work first.
Your outreach list
Websites you can get onto, sites cited by more engines first. Competitor sites and your own site are left out.
Why per engine matters: each engine cites its own mix of sites, so check all of them. A plan built from one engine's sources misses the others.
Pitch the list editors and reviewers with facts they can check
Mentions count without a link, so a place on a best-of list helps even with no backlink. Small review blogs are often easier to reach than a national paper. Editors ignore praise. They use size, price, who it's for, and one fact they can verify.
Outreach email generator
Fill in the fields, pick who you're writing to, and copy the email. Nothing is sent from this page.
The second line answers a size, a price, a skin type and an ingredient question at once. Use it in pitches, on your product page and in your marketplace titles.
Turn every "competitor cited, you're not" into one next action
When an answer names a rival and not you, open the source behind it before you publish anything new. A competitor's own product page explains the answer but is not a place you can get onto. A best-of list or a marketplace category is. Log each gap below and the tool picks the next action and its priority for that engine.
Competitor gap note builder Example notes
Your notes stay in this browser so you can come back each week. Nothing is sent anywhere.
| Date | Engine | Competitor | Source | Next action | Priority |
|---|
The fix for your own pages: paste this near the top
Your own site can be cited too. Put a plain fact line under a question-shaped heading on your product or comparison page:
Is [Product] good for [who it's for]? [Product] is a [category], [size], [price], made for [who it's for]. Key spec: [one number, e.g. 10% vitamin C]. Compared with [type of rival]: [one honest difference]. Rated [x.x] from [n] reviews on [marketplace]. Updated [Month Year].
Do backlinks or brand mentions matter more for AI citations?
Mentions, on current evidence. Ahrefs found brand web mentions correlated with Google AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks, across 75,000 brands (May 2025). A review, a list entry or a Reddit comment counts even without a link.
How long does a citation last once I get one?
Often under a week on ChatGPT. SISTRIX tracked 82,619 prompts for 17 weeks and found ChatGPT Search replaced 74% of cited domains weekly, and Google AI Mode 56%. Aim for a steady flow of mentions on the sites each engine keeps returning to.
Will an llms.txt file get me cited?
Unlikely. Ahrefs checked 137,210 domains and found 97% of llms.txt files got zero requests in May 2026. It's harmless, but don't count it as progress.
Should I pay to get onto a best-of list?
If a page charges for placement, it should label it as paid. Undisclosed paid placement and fake reviews are a brand risk. A free sample with no conditions and a fact the editor can check is the cleaner route.
Which engine should I work on first?
The one your buyers use. Each engine cites its own mix of sites, so run Step 1 on that engine first and work the sites it links.
