An AI Overview is the AI-written summary Google shows above the normal results, with links to the pages it drew from. Google picks those links from its regular search index, so there is no secret markup or AI file to add. Your page has to be allowed to show a snippet, answer the question in its first lines, and be the kind of page Overviews already link. This page checks all three.
Where to start
Make sure Google is allowed to quote your page
Google's rule for AI Overviews is short: a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet, the text preview under a result. A noindex or nosnippet tag, often left behind by a theme, a staging setup or an SEO plugin, quietly takes you out. So does a tiny max-snippet value, because it limits how much Google can quote.
Open your page, right-click, choose View page source, copy everything from <head> to </head>, and paste it below.

The fix: the only robots tag most pages need
Replace any robots or googlebot meta tags on pages you want in AI Overviews with this one, or remove them entirely (no tag means index and full snippets). To hide one block of text, such as a coupon code, wrap it in an element with data-nosnippet instead of blocking the whole page.
<meta name="robots" content="index, follow, max-snippet:-1, max-image-preview:large">
Answer the question in your first two sentences
An Overview quotes text. If your page opens with a welcome line, a story or "there are many options", the answer Google needs sits several paragraphs down, or only inside an image. Google lists keeping important content in text as a best practice. Put the direct answer, with a product name and a number, in the first two sentences, then the detail.
Type the search you want to appear for, paste the first paragraph of your page, and check it.

Build a buying-guide page that answers the question
A buying question needs a page that answers it directly. That can be a buying guide on your blog or a category page named after the need, like a "face washes for oily skin" collection. Fill in your question and products below to get a page outline and Article structured data.

Questions
Do I need special schema, llms.txt or an AI file to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google's AI features documentation says there are no extra requirements, no special schema.org markup and no new machine-readable files. AI Overviews link pages from the normal Search index.
Will blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google says Google-Extended controls use of your content for training Gemini models and does not affect inclusion in Google Search. Blocking Googlebot, or adding noindex or nosnippet, is what removes you.
Can I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?
Only in aggregate. Google includes traffic from AI features in the overall Performance report under the Web search type. There is no separate AI Overview filter.
Do I have to rank on page one first?
It helps, but it is not required. Google says AI Overviews may search related subtopics ("query fan-out") when it builds the answer, so it can link pages beyond the top results for your exact search.
How do I keep a page out of AI Overviews?
Use nosnippet or a low max-snippet on that page, data-nosnippet on specific text, or noindex to leave Search entirely. These also limit the normal search snippet.
